Pluto in the first house
Astronomically speaking, your first house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just below the eastern horizon occupied by planets two hours before they rise. Astrologically it symbolizes early childhood conditioning, and describes self-awareness and the experiences most necessary for its development. The first house is the mask you wear in relating to and projecting yourself into the world. It rules physical appearance, body type, conscious self-image, and how others see and experience you. It’s the window through which you view the world, and through which others receive their first impressions of you.
Whereas your first house is the window through which you view the world and through which others receive their first impressions of you, the sign on the cusp of your first house (your Rising sign) is the particular tint on the glass of that window, coloring and modifying all energy that passes into and out of your being. In fact, all of your personality functions (planetary energies) must eventually emerge through and be colored by your first house cusp if they are to emerge at all. Planets in the first house are parts of your self-expression. The more planets here (except Saturn and Neptune), the more you are involved with putting out your own energy rather than experiencing that of others, hence the greater your subjectivity. Thus the sign on your first house cusp conditions the way you look and how you express yourself.
You're an extremely intense and powerful individual - the more so the closer Pluto is to your ascendant. In this incarnation you're learning to master and control the emotions and the primitive drives within you that, left unconscious, control and direct all of human life. You are shining light into your depths to become more conscious of who you are as an individual. This is your hero's journey; you're alone in this process and have a great need for seclusion. Don't mistake your need for self-mastery and control for your obvious ability to control others. A transformer of self, friends and your environment, your life is one of continual personal growth and evolution, filled with drastic endings and sudden new beginnings. You are learning to express yourself with great intensity and power—and to act as an agent of transformation and personal growth for others—in order to serve the needs of the house Pluto rules (the house Scorpio is on the cusp of; for this, check your chart on page three or the reading for the house Scorpio rules in pages 154 - 177, The Houses section).
If Pluto is within 10° of the ascendant it is conjunct the ascendant, and much of the foregoing is even more strongly emphasized. If Pluto is in the twelfth house AND within 4° or 5° of the ascendant, then it is said to be on the "dark side" of the first house, and it influence will be felt in the first as well as in the twelfth house. The closer a twelfth house Pluto is to the ascendant, the more it will be interpreted as though it were in the first house; when less than 3° from the ascendant, a twelfth house Pluto expresses itself primarily—and eventually entirely—in the first house.

The way we feel about ourselves is conditioned by our experience of our parents’ (or significant others’) acceptance or rejection of us as we were growing up. From these experiences we developed our sense of belonging and our capacity to receive - and/or a sense of alienation and a difficulty or frozenness in receiving. The fourth house rules the home, our family as a child and as an adult, the nurturing parent and our early experience of being nurtured, our most personal and intimate life, real estate and property, and our heritage and ancestry. Here is where we send down roots and establish a base of operations, find our limits, and generally secure ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the Third house, and thus rules the latter part of life. A planet here indicates the need for a stable emotional base in order to fill the needs of the house it rules. The more planets in this house, the more one tends to be subjective, personal, private or introverted. Astronomically speaking, the fourth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky counter-clockwise from the nadir (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours before they reach the lowest point in the local sky. In this incarnation you have chosen to learn to build inner security, rather than to derive it from external sources such as job, lover, family, etc. This occurs not by your becoming a rock or totally alienated from others, but rather by becoming more conscious of your unconscious patterns. As a child you may not have been recognized as the individual you are, nor had your emotional needs met by your parents. That forced you back on yourself, and reinforced the lesson not to depend externally on security. It is often the case that you have had prior life experiences of not having had your emotional or individuality needs met or recognized. You may thus come into this life with a great deal of need ready to be triggered, especially if you have karma with one or both of your parents around these issues. This heightened sensitivity and vulnerability on your part, coupled with this incarnationally repeating family pattern, produces a difficult cycle that needs to be made conscious and understood. It may be, however, that in order to learn the lesson of building security in yourself you have drawn a dominating or even abusive or cruel parent. The more emotional we are, the greater the need for constructive channels of expression. All forms of self-expression, anything we create or do purely for its own sake, children of the mind and the body, love affairs (insofar as they represent fun and self-expression) or their lack, theater, dramatics, hobbies, speculation, play and amusement, are all indicated by this house. The more planets we have in the fifth, the more abundant the energy we have to release, with perhaps some disinterest in receiving the same from others. This is also the house of hidden karma resulting from the misuse of the will or love principle in past lives. Pluto in the sixth house The sixth house, like the sixth sign Virgo, represents the last personal stage in development, and is thus a critical one. The self-adjustment we undergo here determines our ability to relate to others on an equal footing (seventh house), and, by its success or failure, unites us with or separates us from others. This is the house of work and health or the lack of either, hygiene and nutrition, service, servants and servitude, daily routine, employment by others, and small animals and pets. Whereas fifth house activities are done for their own sake, sixth house work is done out of necessity or in support of other, more self-expressive activities. When our work becomes an end in itself, however, or we lose track of its purpose, it becomes pointless, and the result can be physical or psychological illness. The issue with planets in the sixth house is to remember what the purpose of our work is, where is it’s joy? Without this knowledge, life isn’t worth living. Astronomically speaking, the sixth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just below the western horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours after they set. You're learning to purge egocentric patterns of self-grandeur through work and service, sacrificing your personal needs to larger social ones. Pluto in the seventh house The first of the social houses, the seventh house is opposed to the first house literally and in emphasis: in the first house we put our energies into the world; in the seventh the world puts energy back into us. The purpose of the seventh house is to bring about greater self-awareness through relating to what we experience as being outside of ourselves. This may in fact be energy within us that we have rejected out of fear or the need to experience it more objectively or externally. This is called projection, and we seek projected parts of ourselves in our intimate relationships. Thus the seventh house rules intimate one-to-one relationships of all kinds (including marriage, business and counseling relationships), open enemies and conflicts, lawsuits and the lower courts. Planets in the seventh house indicate areas in our lives that need relationships to bring them out, and the houses ruled by seventh house planets are those "areas." Many planets here indicate many needs that we are looking for others to fill. In this case many relationships (or more than one marriage) is probable, as it’s unlikely that one individual would fill all those needs. Individuals with so much projected energy feel a void in their lives, and may encourage others to be dependent, or even pick fights rather than be alone. With the planet of sex and death in your seventh house, your intimate, one-to-one relationships are the arena of your personal growth, transformation, evolution, and aspirations for power. How this manifests in your life depends on how Pluto aspects other planets and the angles in your chart, and on what house Scorpio rules in your horoscope. If Pluto has difficult aspects, your intimate relationships can be a battleground with many power struggles, sudden changes, and endings; trines and sextiles to Pluto indicate experiences in which you can learn about the use and abuse of power from your partner(s). It would be helpful to examine your motives when you enter into a relationship. There's a lot of unconscious energy here, and you may need to learn to compromise and to not dominate your partner so much. On the other hand, you may need to become more aware of your partner trying to dominate or to control you, since it can work both ways. Pluto in the eighth house The eighth house asks us to enlarge or sacrifice our ego boundaries in order to enter into relationship or union with another or others. To do so, some aspect of our personality or ego must die. Usually it is some thing, not some one, that dies, and with the passing away of that limiting aspect of our personality we experience a releasing freedom. Herein is the second aspect of this house: resurrection and rebirth. The eighth house rules personal evolution, growth, transformation and change, death, rebirth, sex, possessions of a relationship, legacies, inheritance, taxes, rituals, initiations and the occult, the astral body and reincarnation, and the severing of ties to that to which we are attached. A planet in the eighth indicates that a personal facet of your psyche is under pressure to work more cooperatively or jointly with others. Many planets here signify a person whose life can be characterized by change. Such individuals may find continuous states of affairs monotonous, and periodically bring about changes or crises to feel truly alive. Astronomically speaking, the eighth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the Midheaven and the western horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two to four hours before they set. The eighth house is Pluto’s natural and strongest position, denoting an intense and powerful agent of growth and personal evolution at work in your life. You periodically come face to face with limits in your personal power, and seek to transcend your limitations by merging with forces larger than yourself such as sex, death, meditation, magic, rituals, money, occult bodies of knowledge, worship of a positive or negative deity, status, or taboo subjects, all denizens of the eighth house. There may also be compulsiveness in your relation to the symbol you have chosen for transcendence. Pluto in the eleventh house The eleventh house is where we find our identity within a group; it symbolizes one-to-many relationships as distinct from Seventh house one-to-one relationships. It rules friends, groups, our social circle, membership in societies and organizations, ideals and aspirations shared by the groups to which we belong, and in general, situations in which we have to change our behavior to get along with more than one other person at the same time. Astronomically speaking, your first house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just below the eastern horizon occupied by planets two hours before they rise. Astrologically it symbolizes early childhood conditioning, and describes self-awareness and the experiences most necessary for its development. The first house is the mask you wear in relating to and projecting yourself into the world. It rules physical appearance, body type, conscious self-image, and how others see and experience you. It’s the window through which you view the world, and through which others receive their first impressions of you.
Whereas your first house is the window through which you view the world and through which others receive their first impressions of you, the sign on the cusp of your first house (your Rising sign) is the particular tint on the glass of that window, coloring and modifying all energy that passes into and out of your being. In fact, all of your personality functions (planetary energies) must eventually emerge through and be colored by your first house cusp if they are to emerge at all. Planets in the first house are parts of your self-expression. The more planets here (except Saturn and Neptune), the more you are involved with putting out your own energy rather than experiencing that of others, hence the greater your subjectivity. Thus the sign on your first house cusp conditions the way you look and how you express yourself.
You're an extremely intense and powerful individual - the more so the closer Pluto is to your ascendant. In this incarnation you're learning to master and control the emotions and the primitive drives within you that, left unconscious, control and direct all of human life. You are shining light into your depths to become more conscious of who you are as an individual. This is your hero's journey; you're alone in this process and have a great need for seclusion. Don't mistake your need for self-mastery and control for your obvious ability to control others. A transformer of self, friends and your environment, your life is one of continual personal growth and evolution, filled with drastic endings and sudden new beginnings. Pluto in the second house
The second house describes both inner and outer resources. We draw on emotional and mental inner resources in dealing with the situations with which life presents us. These assets form our sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Our outer resources are our finances and physical possessions: movable property that we own (as opposed to real estate). These assets form our sense of security. Some of us identify with what we own; others with what we are. They both, however, are what we value, and we attract to us what we value. Thus the second house is where we build in true value and our power of attraction. Planets here show how and to what we are attached, and the degree of our possessiveness.
Classically speaking, this house also symbolizes our strongest desires, and the manner in which we meet our obligations. Isabelle Hickey said that this house indicated "that which the life is dedicated to redeem," and is thus related to one’s peace of mind. Geometrically, the second house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the eastern horizon and the nadir (see above picture) occupied by planets two to four hours before they rise.
Pluto in your second house indicates that over many lifetimes you are being driven to learn self-sufficiency and to stand on your own two feet. Coupled with your strong physical/sexual nature and needs, this often leads to sexual release by yourself even when in deeply satisfying relationships. If so, this is natural for experiencing grounding and self-reliance on your particular evolutionary path, and is not to be judged. You are learning (or have already learned) to identify your own personal resources, values and needs by withdrawing the focus of your attention into yourself. This has produced a limited vision, however, which the outside world transforms and enlarges through periodic shocks or karmic conditions. These may come in the form of deprivation, loss, or through powerful and transformatory individuals who help you to confront your personal limitations. If you use devious means, manipulation, or compulsive spending to obtain wealth or to gratify your needs, then imprisonment, guilt, and the repossession of goods can result with Pluto in your second House. Your personal values and resources are the arena in which your growth and transformation occurs. And you are progressively learning to unite your values, resources, and even your own body with those of others to transcend personal limitations. A well-aspected Pluto may indicate continually renewing assets or finances. If afflicted, however, that upon which you depend may be yanked suddenly and without warning from beneath your feet.

The way we feel about ourselves is conditioned by our experience of our parents’ (or significant others’) acceptance or rejection of us as we were growing up. From these experiences we developed our sense of belonging and our capacity to receive - and/or a sense of alienation and a difficulty or frozenness in receiving. The fourth house rules the home, our family as a child and as an adult, the nurturing parent and our early experience of being nurtured, our most personal and intimate life, real estate and property, and our heritage and ancestry. Here is where we send down roots and establish a base of operations, find our limits, and generally secure ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the Third house, and thus rules the latter part of life. A planet here indicates the need for a stable emotional base in order to fill the needs of the house it rules. The more planets in this house, the more one tends to be subjective, personal, private or introverted. Astronomically speaking, the fourth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky counter-clockwise from the nadir (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours before they reach the lowest point in the local sky. In this incarnation you have chosen to learn to build inner security, rather than to derive it from external sources such as job, lover, family, etc. This occurs not by your becoming a rock or totally alienated from others, but rather by becoming more conscious of your unconscious patterns. As a child you may not have been recognized as the individual you are, nor had your emotional needs met by your parents. That forced you back on yourself, and reinforced the lesson not to depend externally on security. It is often the case that you have had prior life experiences of not having had your emotional or individuality needs met or recognized. You may thus come into this life with a great deal of need ready to be triggered, especially if you have karma with one or both of your parents around these issues. This heightened sensitivity and vulnerability on your part, coupled with this incarnationally repeating family pattern, produces a difficult cycle that needs to be made conscious and understood. It may be, however, that in order to learn the lesson of building security in yourself you have drawn a dominating or even abusive or cruel parent. The more emotional we are, the greater the need for constructive channels of expression. All forms of self-expression, anything we create or do purely for its own sake, children of the mind and the body, love affairs (insofar as they represent fun and self-expression) or their lack, theater, dramatics, hobbies, speculation, play and amusement, are all indicated by this house. The more planets we have in the fifth, the more abundant the energy we have to release, with perhaps some disinterest in receiving the same from others. This is also the house of hidden karma resulting from the misuse of the will or love principle in past lives. Pluto in the sixth house The sixth house, like the sixth sign Virgo, represents the last personal stage in development, and is thus a critical one. The self-adjustment we undergo here determines our ability to relate to others on an equal footing (seventh house), and, by its success or failure, unites us with or separates us from others. This is the house of work and health or the lack of either, hygiene and nutrition, service, servants and servitude, daily routine, employment by others, and small animals and pets. Whereas fifth house activities are done for their own sake, sixth house work is done out of necessity or in support of other, more self-expressive activities. When our work becomes an end in itself, however, or we lose track of its purpose, it becomes pointless, and the result can be physical or psychological illness. The issue with planets in the sixth house is to remember what the purpose of our work is, where is it’s joy? Without this knowledge, life isn’t worth living. Astronomically speaking, the sixth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just below the western horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours after they set. You're learning to purge egocentric patterns of self-grandeur through work and service, sacrificing your personal needs to larger social ones. Lessons in the work place involving humility and self-purification are helping you pierce the balloon of your own self-inflated importance. Through intense self-examination you are learning to identify with larger and larger wholes. Be careful of depriving yourself of life (never feeling ready or good enough) due to unconscious guilt at falling short of your standard of perfection. Pluto in the sixth has dramatically opposed potentials: you have the ability to either breathe new life into your work, or lack the consistency to complete it. You may inspire others in their application to work, or bring about chaos through abusing your responsibility. You can have great powers of recuperation with this placement, but if Pluto is poorly aspected it can be experienced as a continual energy drain. If Pluto is within 10° of the descendant (seventh house cusp), then it is conjunct the descendant and much of the foregoing interpretation starts to become weaker. Pluto in the seventh house The first of the social houses, the seventh house is opposed to the first house literally and in emphasis: in the first house we put our energies into the world; in the seventh the world puts energy back into us. The purpose of the seventh house is to bring about greater self-awareness through relating to what we experience as being outside of ourselves. This may in fact be energy within us that we have rejected out of fear or the need to experience it more objectively or externally. This is called projection, and we seek projected parts of ourselves in our intimate relationships. Thus the seventh house rules intimate one-to-one relationships of all kinds (including marriage, business and counseling relationships), open enemies and conflicts, lawsuits and the lower courts. Planets in the seventh house indicate areas in our lives that need relationships to bring them out, and the houses ruled by seventh house planets are those "areas." Many planets here indicate many needs that we are looking for others to fill. In this case many relationships (or more than one marriage) is probable, as it’s unlikely that one individual would fill all those needs. Individuals with so much projected energy feel a void in their lives, and may encourage others to be dependent, or even pick fights rather than be alone. There's a lot of unconscious energy here, and you may need to learn to compromise and to not dominate your partner so much. Pluto in the eighth house The eighth house asks us to enlarge or sacrifice our ego boundaries in order to enter into relationship or union with another or others. To do so, some aspect of our personality or ego must die. Usually it is some thing, not some one, that dies, and with the passing away of that limiting aspect of our personality we experience a releasing freedom. Herein is the second aspect of this house: resurrection and rebirth. The eighth house rules personal evolution, growth, transformation and change, death, rebirth, sex, possessions of a relationship, legacies, inheritance, taxes, rituals, initiations and the occult, the astral body and reincarnation, and the severing of ties to that to which we are attached. A planet in the eighth indicates that a personal facet of your psyche is under pressure to work more cooperatively or jointly with others. Pluto in the eleventh house The eleventh house is where we find our identity within a group; it symbolizes one-to-many relationships as distinct from Seventh house one-to-one relationships. It rules friends, groups, our social circle, membership in societies and organizations, ideals and aspirations shared by the groups to which we belong, and in general, situations in which we have to change our behavior to get along with more than one other person at the same time. Planets in the eleventh house show the kind of friends we attract to us, or the kinds of energy we experience in relation to groups. Just so, our first instances of self-expression that we offer into the world are vulnerable and easily defeated, but the effect of their success or failure on our personality is enormous. Pulling some of our energy back into our self to keep it from being defeated or overwhelmed has two results. If we are aware of what we are doing, it becomes our hidden secret. If this process is unconscious, it becomes a rejected aspect of the self. These secrets or repressed aspects of the self form the classical interpretation of the twelfth house. But what if the immature energy we put into the world isn’t defeated early on? Then it can become a source of strength and a dominant aspect of our personality, and even signify our career. The twelfth house is thus where we build inner strength to overcome limitations, sorrows and fears, and where the individual adapts to the collective. It signifies self-undoing: where we stand in our own way, where we are not free to let ourselves become and be who we essentially already are. It also represents that which is hidden, karma, limitation, confinement, prison, betrayal, sacrifice, hospitals and institutions, nuns and priests, secrets and secret enemies (who may just be rejected aspects of ourselves), initiation, ultimate understanding, and charity given or received. Astronomically speaking, the twelfth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just above the eastern horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets during the two hours after they rise. If well aspected, Pluto in your twelfth house can act like an "exterminating angel", destroying harm that might otherwise befall you. You may be able to find and to summon up deep inner resources when you really need them. If Pluto is poorly aspected here, however, you may have to be on guard against hidden, negative energies (described by the aspects to Pluto, see page 142 in your personalized fine art book, "You and the Universe") at work against you and your plans. In rare instances, you'll have the capacity to tap energy from the collective pool of mankind. If Pluto is within 10° of the ascendant it is conjunct the first house cusp and much of the above interpretation starts to become weaker. If Pluto is in the twelfth house AND within 4° or 5° of the ascendant, then it is said to be on the "dark side" of the first house, and it influence will be felt in the first as well as in the twelfth house. The closer a twelfth house Pluto is to the ascendant, the more it will be interpreted as though it were in the first house; when less than 3° from the ascendant, a twelfth house Pluto expresses itself primarily—and eventually entirely—in the first house.
