DAMASCUS/UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- As clashes continue in Syria, the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet again Saturday morning to vote on a resolution on the country.
On Friday, a group of armed "terrorists" attacked some border guards in the Dar al-Kabir area on the borders with Lebanon, near the hotbed of unrest, Homs province, and killed three of them, including a colonel, the private Sham FM radio reported.
Also in Homs, unidentified gunmen stormed an infirmary in the Bustan al-Diwan area and set it ablaze after looting it.
Meanwhile, an explosive device reportedly went off in Siraj village in the Jabal al-Zawya region of northern Idlib province, injuring two.
In another explosion earlier in the day in the province's town of Kafr Takharim, three children were killed. A witness confirmed the blast, telling Xinhua that he had heard a loud explosion in the area. Sham FM put the death toll at four without giving further details.
To end the bloody violence, the Arab League and the Western countries have drafted a resolution that asked President Bashar al-Assad to resign, seeking support from the UN Security Council.
Although the sponsors of the draft dropped the specific reference to Assad's giving up power after four hours of tough negotiations to avoid a veto by Russia, the country still boycotted the resolution.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday that it would not support the updated version of the Western-Arab draft resolution on Syria as it still fails to take into account Moscow's principal considerations.
"We have received the text (of the revised draft). Although some of our concerns have been considered, nevertheless, this is not enough for us to support it," Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said.
The UN Security Council is now scheduled to meet in an open session to discuss the situation in Syria Saturday morning, the UN Spokesperson's Office announced Friday.
Diplomats said that the revised UN Arab-European draft resolution will be voted on when the council meets on Saturday.
The announcement came after Thursday's negotiations that reached a consensus on sending the draft resolution to the council members' capitals for further instructions.
In an effort to garner support from Russia, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday had a telephone conversation with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the stalled draft resolution.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a regular briefing that Clinton made the call during her flight to Munich for the annual security conference there, and the two chief diplomats agreed that "their teams in New York would continue to consult on this draft resolution."
"We want to see the Security Council speak in a unified and strong fashion in support of the Syrian people, but also to the Syrian government that the violence needs to end and a political transition needs to take place," he said.
But Toner declined to say whether Clinton has secured Russia's support for a watered-down UN Security Council resolution on Syria.
As the Security Council still seems divided over finding an appropriate approach to end the simmering tension in Syria, opponents and proponents in Syria appeared to be united over rejecting any measure that would change Assad's government by force, saying it would be "disastrous."
George Gabbour, a political analyst, believed that Syrians reject the use of force to topple the government in their country because "the use of military power would be disastrous and it doesn't commensurate with the interests of a large segment of the Syrian people."
Gabbour told Xinhua that toppling the government by force is "a violation to the United Nations' charter and the principles of international law."
For his part, Hassan Abdul-Azim, head of the opposing National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, also rejected the concept of using force to change the Assad regime.
"Such intervention would pose dangerous repercussions on the Syrian and regional arena as well," Abdul-Azim told Xinhua.
