第二节 “说”是听懂之后水到渠成的事情
如果说听、读是输入的话,那么说和写就是输出了。前者是把听懂的东西照样子模仿说出来,后者是把阅读过的东西照样子模仿写出来的过程。
儿子在上初中之前,因为很少有机会碰上外国人,所以我不曾见到他用英语与他人交流的过程。上初一时,儿子与学校的外教Halulko先生成了好朋友,我们一家请他一起去后海游玩。自然是先到极具中国特色的孔乙己餐厅吃饭,Halulko先生不大懂汉语,所以儿子开始给他介绍起菜单来。那是我第一次听儿子说那么流利的英语,很是吃惊,之前并没有见他说过英语呀?看来没有机会说外语并不能成为不会说英语的借口,而是“听”没有过关,听的多了,在不得不说的时候自然就说出口了。
不过正因为意识到儿子说英语的机会太少,所以,我总是想方设法为儿子创造说英语的机会。

儿子获新东安杯一等奖、8城市英语戏剧比赛最佳表演奖、21世纪杯一等奖、新东方《生而为赢》背诵大赛一等奖,参加外研社《新标准英语拍摄》,为北京师范大学《主题英语》教材录音……让孩子做这些事情并不是为了头上多顶几个光环,更多的是为了能创造机会多说英语。每次大赛或者活动,儿子英语口语水平都有一次升华。
大概是小学一年级吧,我跟儿子在王府井的新东安市场闲逛,正赶上一层大厅举办首届《新东安杯英语口语比赛》。(图43参加英语口语比赛)那时候,这类比赛并不多,儿子挺好奇,就停下来听了一会儿。 “妈妈,我也想上去说!”儿子是个天不怕地不怕的孩子,无论在多么大的场合,只要有提问,儿子总是把手举得高高的。有时候,为了抢到发言权,他还不知道问题是什么也会举手,先抢下来再说。
我带他去找组织者,他们竟然答应让儿子试一试。我连忙帮儿子编了几句台词,大意无非是我叫某某某,今天我想给大家讲个故事,故事的名字叫《XXX》,希望大家喜欢。儿子肚子里存了很多诸如《小红帽》、《北风爷爷》、《彩虹》等小故事,所以,就踌躇满志地走上了台。那天,他讲了一个非常有意思的小故事《SKYFIRE》。(图44天火)过了一周去看榜,没想到儿子竟然获得了一等奖。这个看来很偶然的结果其实也是必然,那个年代,大部分孩子都是在小学三年级开始学习英语,儿子则从三岁开始就做准备了,机会是绝不会在你没有准备好的时候出现的。
此后,类似的比赛多了起来,儿子成了拿奖的专业户。但给他留下最美好回忆的应该是小学四年级那次在香港举办的“8城市英语戏剧比赛”。这是北师大实验小学另一个非常好的传统,他们每年都组织队伍代表北京市参加这个重要比赛。
学校对演员的选拔非常严格,因为实验小学里师大的子弟很多,为了客观公正,校方请了外校的老师当评委。估计是怕太小的孩子照顾不好自己,学校选了四名五年级的学生,在英语杨老师的大力举荐下,儿子成为入选演员里唯一的四年级学生。
为了拍好小剧,学校请来了在师大读书的23岁美国大男孩丹来给孩子们辅导。最初的剧本很无聊,编了一个取笑老奶奶耳聋打岔的故事,有点像某些隔靴搔痒的相声。丹读了后直皱眉头:“这个不好,这个不礼貌!”丹的汉语说得像大山一样好,当你问他想不想找一个中国女孩做妻子而他说“顺其自然吧”的时候,你会忘记他是一个美国人,他给自己起了一个非常好听的中国名字:童丹宁。
丹自己把童话故事《三只小猪》改编成了现代版,其中有一个演员要分饰狼和房地产商两个角色,丹一定是看上了儿子天不怕地不怕的性格,决定让儿子一人来演这两个角色。有的老师提出异议:“这个狼是不是太胖了点?”那时候儿子的确开始发胖了。丹坚持说:“胖了没关系,说不定更有卡通效果!”
学校的美术老师非常有才华,很短时间内就赶制了精美的服装和漂亮的道具,为了便于携带,那些道具房子全部都设计成轻便、可拆卸的,比赛那天在舞台上,孩子们就是自己在舞台上把“房子”组装好的。大灰狼的服装更是剪裁得栩栩如生,怎料出发的前一天晚上,马大哈儿子竟把服装丢了,他又悔又怕哭个不停,老师们辛苦找了几个小时,才在学校的垃圾桶里找到,险些将成大祸。
演出大获成功,实验小学囊括了那次比赛的所有奖项,包括最佳导演奖、最佳整体效果奖和儿子获得的最佳表演奖。(图45 演出大获成功)
每次大赛后,儿子的英语水平都会有非常明显的提高,但这次比赛的意义远不止此:儿子和丹成了好朋友!此后,只要有空儿,丹每个周四下午都在宿舍里义务教儿子英语,热爱中国的他甚至还和我们一起回河南老家过了一个地地道道的中国春节,直到突然有一天丹生病回美国了,从此我们再也没有见到他。(图46想当美国总统的丹)
附上两个文件,算是对老朋友丹的纪念,一个是丹的作品《The Three Little Pigs》,有兴趣的老师和家长可以找几个孩子试着表演,另一个是儿子写的日记《我的外教丹》。

M:
Pigs 1,2,3: Huh!??
M:
Pig 3: Come on, let's go, you can see she's not going to change her mind.
Pig 3:
Pig 1: No way!
Pig 2: We're not living with you!
Scene 2:
Pig l: Here?
Pig 3: No!
Pig 2: Over there!
Pig 3: Nope.
R: Step right up!
Pigs l,2,3: We'd like to buy houses.
R: Well, it depends how much you're willing to pay.
Pig l:
Pig 2: I know mother intended the money to be spent on a house of bricks, but if I choose a house of sticks, I'll have enough money left over for a new computer. I'll take a house of sticks.
Pig 3:
R: All right then, each of you sign right here.

Pig l: Vrooru!, Vroom!
W:
I'm the big bad, wolf, and I'm the boss of these parts.
I'm the gangster of gangsters, so don't make me start.
Pay up protection or I'll eat out your heart.
Let me, in Little Pig.
Pig l: Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin.
W:
Scene 4:
Pig l: Help, Sister! Let me in!
Pig 2: What's wrong?
W
I'm the big, big, bad Wolf, as everyone knows.
Pigs l&2: Not by the Hair of our chinny, chin, chins!
W: Then, I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house m.
Scene 5:
Pig 3: What is that din?
Pig 2:
Pig 3: Come in, brother and sister, in my house you'll be safe.
W
I am the Wolf,
And this town is all mine.
I'm hungry for greenbacks,
Pigs l,2,3: Not by the hair of our chinny, chin, chins.
W
Then, I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in.
Pig 2: You'll need a whole lot of puff.
Pig 3: And this time, old wolf, I don't think you've enough.
W:

M: Wait!
Pig 3: Why, he's no wolf at all, but the man who sold us our houses.
M: I hired this actor to teach you a lesson.

M: And that's just the ending, I hoped there would be.
